Tammany Hall was the most famous political machine in New York City. This political machine controlled New York City from the 1850s to the 1930s. Tammany Hall assigned "bosses" to each district of New York City and put them in charge of gathering votes. Irish immigrants especially supported Tammany Hall. William "Boss" Tweed was the most corrupt politician of his time & ran Tammany Hall in New York City at the height of its power. Tweed made a fortune using "kickbacks" and gathering votes in New York City for Tammany Hall. Tweed was arrested in 1871 when his supporters turned against him. He escaped to Spain and was later returned to the Untied States where he died in jail in 1878, |
